That’s a fantastic question! Small batch coffee is defined as coffee roasted in quantities of up to 50 pounds. If a roaster can roast 50 pounds of coffee, the best batch size is 30 pounds. Why? Most roasters don’t tell you this: it’s not only about the batch size; it’s also about a) the size of the roasted batch in relation to the roasting cylinder’s maximum capacity, and b) the degree of human intervention or control required to perfect the roast.
